Enterprise Administrator - Systems

The Enterprise Administrator is a subject matter expert who participates in the running of a heterogeneous compute facility for a state of the art research facility. This facility encompasses over 300 desktop seats, 20PB of networked storage and over 30,000 cores of clustered high performance compute (HPC). This position will report to the Systems Manager. The GSC Systems team is looking for a team member to support the current server and storage administrators with meeting our objectives.

The ideal candidate will have experience administering Linux/Windows servers and working with NFS and SMB. This role will also have a focus on enterprise storage so experience with storage clusters from vendors such as HP,IBM,Netapp,Dell etc is highly beneficial. A keenness to learn new things and grow within our team is desirable.

Key Accountabilities

· Configuration and tuning of Windows or Linux operation systems, installation of software onto systems

· Provisioning NFS and SMB shares and troubleshooting storage issues on Windows, Mac and Linux

· Maintenance of Enterprise networked storage

· Assisting the storage team in managing the hardware/software and administering the storage clusters

· Assisting the storage team with data backup and retrieval tasks

· Participate in the archiving of data to LTO tape libraries

· Assisting junior team members

· Documenting processes and maintaining knowledge bases

· Other duties as prescribed by supervisor


A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience. Two (2) years experience in Linux or Windows systems, or storage cluster administration role.

Intermediate level of expertise with the Linux operating system with preference to Centos/RedHat variants including building and configuring both physical and virtual servers . Understanding of Linux internals and CLI will be beneficial.

Experience with enterprise class storage systems, and an understanding of the fundamentals of their setup and design is an advantage.

Proficiency in scripting languages such as bash, perl and python.

Self-motivated, personal accountability with the ability to work independently within a team environment following prescribed processes with the ability to give direction to junior and intermediate team members. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate a variety of activities to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with individuals at all levels, both internal and external to the GSC. Strong analytical skills. A problem solver able to dive deep into a problem without losing sight of the big picture and working with integrity, adaptability and originality. Physical ability to perform the duties of the job and lift 50 lbs.
