Web Programmer

Job Code: WP 03-15-2018

BC Cancer’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre has an opening for a web programmer responsible for maintaining web server software, including the underlying computer servers and architecture, to support information and data distribution by the GSC. The position is within the GSC’s Systems Team. This is a professional level job that works with supervision from a senior team member or the Systems Coordinator. Working with other teams within the GSC, the web programmer is provided with work direction, is required to complete work assignments, and refers unresolved issues to their supervisor.


  1. Maintain servers on which public websites for the GSC and individual data studies are hosted

  2. Install, configure, upgrade and maintain apache and tomcat servers

  3. Use technical knowledge and aptitude to analyze web servers making recommendations as to website performance improvements, website security and troubleshooting problems.

  4. Work with other members of the institute enabling them to create and maintain web content via services such as Drupal

  5. Maintain data portals for data sharing with other institutions

  6. Aid in the creation of web forms and web pages as needed

  7. Support the data management roles of bioinformatics teams

  8. Perform other related duties as assigned. 


    Education, Training and Experience  

  • Graduation from a recognized degree or diploma program in computer programming or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to both technical and non-technical staff.

  • Ability to organize work.

  • Familiarity with http, html, xml, javascript, PhP, Drupal, the Atlassian suite or similar tool sets.

  • Experience with installing apache and/or tomcat server software

  • Strong Linux skills essential with knowledge of Windows and Macintosh.
