Web Developer

Job Code: WD 12-01-2018

BC Cancer’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre has an opening for a web developer. The position is within the GSC’s Systems Team. This is a professional level job that works with supervision from a senior team member or the Systems Coordinator. Working with other teams within the GSC, the web developer is provided with work direction, is required to complete work assignments, and refers unresolved issues to their supervisor.



  1. Functions as a web developer by providing expertise writing web pages, developing web sites and maintaining infrastructure systems which serve websites.


  2. Uses technical knowledge and aptitude to analyze web servers making recommendations as to website performance improvements, website security and troubleshooting problems.


  3. Develops processes and documents to enable employees of the GSC without a technical background to build and edit web pages.


  4. Maintains existing GSC web sites and the Atlassian suite.


  5. Performs other related duties as assigned.




Education, Training and Experience 

Graduation from a recognized degree or diploma program in computer programming or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to both technical and non-technical staff.

  • Ability to organize work.

  • Familiarity with http, html, xml, javascript, PhP, Drupal, the Atlassian suite or similar tool sets.

  • Knowledge of Windows and Macintosh with strong Linux skills essential.
