Web Developer

Job Code: WD 11-28-2018

BC Cancer’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre has an opening for a Web Developer. This position is responsible for creating and maintaining the GSC web sites. These web sites are used to educate team members, stakeholders and the public, about the GSC and to disseminate information about our research and services. This professional level position is within the GSC’s Systems Team, which works under the supervision of senior team members and reports to the Systems Coordinator. Working with other GSC teams, the Web Developer will receive direction and assignments, and will refer unresolved issues to their supervisor.

Duties 

  1. Maintain public and internal websites for the GSC, its teams and departments and all associated data studies.
  2. Use technical knowledge and aptitude to analyze web servers, making recommendations as to website performance improvements, security and troubleshooting.
  3. Work with other members of the GSC to enable them to create and maintain web content via content management systems, including Drupal, Plone and others.
  4. Aid in the creation of web pages and web forms, as needed.
  5. Advise bioinformatics teams in regard to the use and development of data presentation tools.
  6. Support the knowledge translation team in the creation of search engine optimized web content designed to market the GSC to external audiences; provide website analytics and statistics to the team as needed.   
  7. Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications 

Education, Training and Experience  

  • Graduation from a recognized degree or diploma program in computer programming or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to both technical and non-technical staff.

  • Ability to organize work and to work well with others in a team-dependent environment.

  • Familiarity with http, html, xml, javascript, PhP

  • Experience with configuring apache and tomcat servers.

  • Familiarity with Linux is essential; working knowledge of Windows and Macintosh is an asset.

  • Familiarity with search engine optimization (SEO) and web analytic techniques.
