Research Associate - Bioinformatics

Job Code: RA 05-14-2018

The Genome Sciences Centre is looking for a senior bioinformatician to develop data sharing and "big data" analytical approaches, as part of an initiative funded by the Terry Fox Research Institute to develop a Canadian Comprehensive Cancer Centre Network.

Based at the Genome Sciences Centre at the British Columbia Cancer Agency, the successful incumbent will help to devise, develop and implement data sharing methods between our partner sites for cancer genome and transcriptome data.  They will also research how these data can be used within Canada to improve precision medicine as it applies to the delivery of healthcare in cancer. Ultimately, these data will generate a "big data" analytics platform from which further insights into the biology of cancer will be realized.  We expect the successful incumbent to also have a fundamental interest in the latter.

- Conduct research and supervise projects with the project to meet its goal of genomic data analysis and multicentre data sharing.
- Apply and implement new and novel methods for the analysis of cancer genome sequence.
- Interact closely with the PI and clinicians to establish the cancer biology and clinical history of research subjects.
- Evaluate sequence variants through the use of software prediction tools and help apply guidelines for the interpretation of sequence variants in the context of precision medicine.
- Data management and tracking of NGS data
- Apply computational skills to develop innovative ways to discover relationships between cancer genes, their annotation and clinical outcomes.
- Present findings at local, national and international scientific meetings where the impression can have direct influence on future scientific funding
- Take an active role in the writing of manuscripts describing the research findings.
- Assist in the development of grant applications related to the research.
- Contribute to required quarterly and annual reports related to the research projects.
- Work with principal investigator to ensure that all scientific milestones are achieved.
- Ensure that computer code is developed in an industry standard and professional manner.
- Perform other related duties as required.

Education and Experience:
- Ph.D. degree in a life sciences or quantitative discipline.
- A minimum of 2 years demonstrated experience in bioinformatics with focus on genome sequence data processing and analysis.

Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of bioinformatics, with emphasis on genome sequence analysis and gene annotation.
- Knowledge of scientific tools, technologies and online resources as pertaining to cancer genomics.
- Java, C, Python and/or Perl programming experience.
- Experience with high-performance computing.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
