Laboratory Coordinator

The Laboratory Coordinator coordinates a variety of activities within the GSC, including maintaining and implementing safety and security policies, supervising media preparation staff and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulatory standards.

Due to the expanding workload at the GSC, an additional Laboratory Coordinator is required.

DUTIES:

  • Deals with issues related to building, security, orientation, safety and equipment
  • Implements safety and security policies and procedures and communicates safety information to staff
  • Ensures compliance with health & safety regulatory standards
  • Develops and provides orientation to new GSC staff
  • Provides leadership and direction to supervised staff, providing day to day guidance
  • Ensures an effective laboratory operation is maintained and efficient services are provided
  • Responds to requests for maintenance, building issues and repair of equipment

QUALIFICATIONS:

A level of education, training, and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Science or related discipline plus three (3) years of leadership experience in a research or laboratory environment.

 Strong interpersonal skills coupled with excellent organization and project management skills. Advanced knowledge of laboratory products, equipment and operations. Excellent written and oral communication skills with demonstrable judgment and discretion. Ability to prioritize and exercise initiative. Ability to work under pressure with a diverse group of persons, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of a variety of computer software products  such as word processing, spreadsheet, database applications, scheduling, e-mail and internet. Ability to work as a team member while supervising and leading a group. Detail oriented. Demonstrated knowledge of WHMIS guidelines and Occupational Health and Safety standards.  Demonstrated knowledge of sterile techniques for the preparation of glassware and use of laboratory equipment. Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.  Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
