Genomics Research Programmer

The Centre for Clinical Genomics (CCG) at the Genome Sciences Centre is seeking a Genomics Research Programmer to join a software automation project with specific milestones and defined outcomes. The CCG is responsible for developing high-throughput, clinically accredited pipelines to analyse sequenced data from genomic assays for individualized patient management of cancer. We seek candidates with Python programming skills to automate and improve existing pipelines and potentially incorporate third-party software into the system.

The role is ideally suited for a creative individual with a strong interest in software development and testing, data analysis, and automation within a high throughput academic setting.


    • Assist in the design and implementation of automating bioinformatic pipelines to meet objectives of the project.
    • Work with other project team members to develop and test code, and implement software.
    • Assist in management of observed sequence variation databases, and integrating internal and external variant databases.
    • Produce thorough but concise written documentation of algorithms, validations, SOPs, and other processes and procedures as required.


    • Graduation from a recognized Bachelor of Science Program in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or other relevant field. A Master’s degree in a relevant field would be a strong asset. 
    • Two (2) years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the Medical Director of the Centre of Clinical Genomics.

Skills and Abilities: 

    • Expertise with Python; able to provide links to code samples via GitHub or other open repository.
    • Comfortable working in a Unix environment; experience with shell scripting and common command-line tools.
    • Functional knowledge of distributed version control systems such as SVN or GIT.
    • Experience in statistical analysis using modern computational tools; experience with any relevant tools will be considered, but R and Python are preferred.
    • Experience with software testing and cluster computing.
    • Able to collaborate and write software in a team environment.
    • Familiar with Agile software practices.
