Data Officer

The Genome Sciences Centre is looking for a Data Officer to help develop a data sharing framework and the associated IT/networking structure and data stewardship responsibilities, as part of an initiative funded by the Terry Fox Research Institute to develop a Canadian Comprehensive Cancer Centre Network.

Based at the Genome Sciences Centre within BC Cancer, the successful incumbent will develop and implement data sharing methods between our partner sites for data generated from cancer studies. The Data Officer will also research how these data can be used within Canada to improve precision medicine as it applies to the delivery of healthcare in cancer. Working with Principle Investigators and other stakeholders, the officer will also develop and disseminate standards/best practice for data sharing to drive national adoption among other cancer centres. 

Responsibilities 

  • Establish processes and policies for data sharing including a long-term philosophy and approach for data sharing

  • Liaise with ethics boards, technical teams, clinicians and other stakeholders to address privacy barriers and facilitate the necessary approvals for real time data sharing

  • Coordinate with provincial strategies for big data infrastructure and data sharing, and leverage these to facilitate interprovincial data sharing as part of the project

  • Work with the IT team and data access committee to manage data access and ensure data security

  • Contribute to reports related to the research project

  • Perform other related duties within the institution, supporting the growth and evolution of the project 

Qualifications

  • PhD degree preferred

  • Knowledge of research ethics and the regulation of personal information with regards to data sharing

  • Knowledge of IT data security in a research setting

  • Experience navigating legal requirements for data sharing

  • Familiar working with regulatory guidelines surrounding clinical/genomics studies

  • Ability to build strong and effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated organizational skills which have efficiently and effectively provided data management/monitoring support for multiple clinical trials and projects including providing accurate information in a timely manner
