Computational Biologist – LIMS

The Genome Sciences Centre is seeking a full-time Computational Biologist to join our Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) group in a state of the art, high throughput genomics facility. The successful applicant will participate in the development and maintenance of our LIMS system, with a focus on web front-end development, creating interfaces for laboratory staff, analysis teams and external collaborators. They will also participate in the development of our sequence analysis and data submission pipelines. We seek candidates with coding experience in python, perl, C/C++ or java, expertise in development and management of large databases and web sites, with prior experience in mySQL and web applications.

The role is ideally suited for a creative individual with a strong interest in software development, database analysis and web application development within a high throughput academic setting.

Examples of Duties/Accountabilities:

1. Developing and maintaining the LIMS database:

a)    Routine database integrity checks and database maintenance.
b)    Development of views and interfaces for data entry.
c)    Investigation of new frameworks and designing new schemas and tables.
d)    Communicating with stakeholders in the lab, on analysis teams, and in external collaborations to understand and document requirements for development.

2. Development and maintenance of sequence analysis pipelines:

a)   fastq formatting
b)   sequence alignment

3.   Managing the storage and compression of over 5Pb of sequence data.

4.   Tests and validates new data analysis software for analyses such as alignment, duplicate marking and merging.

5. Performs other related duties as required. 

Qualifications:

A degree in computer science and two years of database experience is required. Prior experience in a bioinformatics setting or biological sciences would be considered an asset. 

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to interact effectively within a dynamic team-based research environment, and should be able to communicate effectively with all levels of staff both verbally and in writing.
