Computational Biologist, Analysis

The Genome Sciences Centre is seeking a full-time Computational Biologist to join our analysis team in a state of the art, high throughput genomics facility. The successful applicant will participate in the analysis of sequencing data by developing, refining and adapting bioinformatics tools for a high-throughput processing pipeline. We seek candidates with strong coding experience in python, perl, C/C++ or java. Experience with statistical analysis, handling of biological data and relational databases are also desirable.

The role is ideally suited for a creative individual with a strong interest in software development and data analysis within an academic setting. Packaging and distribution of developed tools and analysis results to the scientific community and contribution to preparation of scientific publications are expected. 

Duties/Accountabilities:

1.Developing and maintaining core analysis pipelines at the GSC, such as:

a)    Somatic and single sample variant calling on whole genomes, exomes and transcriptomes (eg SNVs, indels, CNVs, LOH)

b)    De novo assembly of short read sequences and identification of putative structural variants.

c)    Gene and transcript expression quantification and differential expression

d)    Microbial classification and detection

e)    New analyses pipelines as required

2. Statistical and population analysis of large cohorts of biological data.

3. Responding to analysis from the scientific community by running core pipelines, additional statistical analyses, suggesting analyses where appropriate, preparing presentations of results to collaborators and responding to collaborator questions on results.

4. Presenting results of analysis or software testing internally and externally

5. Maintaining GSC analysis and variant databases.

6. Literature searches, testing and validation of new data analysis software.

 7. Performing other related duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

• Graduation from a recognized Bachelor of Science Program in either Biological Sciences or Computer Science.
• Two (2) year’s of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the GSC Group Leaders.

Skills and Abilities

• Experience with relevant operating systems.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with others in a team environment.
• Demonstrated ability to efficiently organize work assignments and establish priorities.

• Demonstrated ability communicate effectively verbally and in writing
